Our Landmarks
In summer of 1927, June the 7th, through the merger between the three sports clubs the “Associazione Sportiva Roma” was born. The new club took on the Capitoline Wolf symbol for its crest and colors of the city – yellow and red – beloved by people of the old districts and the city suburbs. After a decade of good performances, in the 1941-42 season the first Scudetto arrived under the coaching of the Austro-Hungarian Alfred Schaffer.
The club’s first international success came in 1960-61. Roma landed in the final act of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup against Birmingham led by coach Carniglia and bomber Manfredini, called “Piedone” (“Big Foot”). The 1960s also gave several other satisfactions to the Giallorossi fans. Two Italian Cups (’64 and ’69), but above all players stars: Francisco Lojacono, Juan Alberto Schiaffino, Antonio Angelillo, Giacomo Losi and “Picchio” De Sisti wore the AS Roma shirt.
In the summer of 1979, Rome then experienced a historic turning point, with the arrival of president Dino Viola and emerging youngsters such as Bruno Conti, Carlo Ancelotti, Roberto Pruzzo, as well as absolute champion like Paulo Roberto Falcao.
The long wait after the success of 1942 came to an end in the 1982-83 season. Rome became Champion of Italy and the following season the club reached his first Champions’ League final. The late ‘80s were cheered by the emergence of Giuseppe Giannini and the arrival of striker Rudi Voeller, In 1991, under the guidance of Ottavio Bianchi, Roma reached the UEFA Cup final against FC Inter.
After a long time waiting for a trophy, president Sensi decided to rely on one of the coaches who had won the most in recent years in Italy: Fabio Capello. He made available to him a group of top level players: Montella, Nakata, the argentinian bomber Batistuta, as well as two pillars such as Samuel and Emerson, the 2000-01 season was resolved with the Scudetto victory and the following successes contributed to making Roma permanently enter the elite of Italian and international football.
